A Horrifying Disaster

Disaster

My producer, Dave Liang, has thrown his hat into the Radiohead remix game.

Those few days between Christmas and New Years are always a nice time to reflect on the year that has just been. I’ve decedied to join in all the list-making, and provide my own list: swimnaked’s List of Good Things from 2007! (in no order or genre)

Juno Poster

- Juno: Just saw this incredibly charming and touching movie. Someone I saw it with said she didn’t believe a 16 yr old would speak like that, and I reminded her that we haven’t seen 16 in over 12 years…so maybe they do, now. More importantly, the tone of the script, the pitch perfect direction, and the star making turn for lead Ellen Page (as well as scene stealers JK Simmons & Allison Janney) made this not only one of the best films of the year, but one of the best I’ve seen in years.

30 Rock

- 30 Rock: Possibly the funniest TV show since Seinfled…season 2 has not disappointed anyone. The writer’s strike seems to be the only thing that can stop this classic-in-the-making in it’s tracks!

Mark Ronson

- Mark Ronson, Version: This album of rearranged covers released in the summer has been an iPod staple for over 4 months and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The Amy Winehouse cover of The Zuton’s Valerie or The Daptone horns doing a blistering cover of Coldplay’s God Put A Smile Upon Your Face are two of my favorites.

Folks, I don’t want to continue the cycle of stereotyping here but let’s be honest: when you have a mullet, wear leather vests with no undershirt, spend time in prison for murder, have a nickname like “Dog”, and have a real name like Duane…guess what? You’re probably a racist.

In Dog We Trust? With what exactly?

The Inverse Proportion of Good

September 24, 2007

This is one of my favorite times of year – the roll out of brand new shows by the major networks. Truth be told, it’s not my favorite time of year for the reason you might think…a chance to see quality new television programs….no way, it’s the complete opposite. My ego gets massaged nicely when I make some mental notes as to which shows are going to last the least amount of time. Sorry to say, I have little to no confidence in most of the new shows this season. Um, The Big Bang Theory? Who greenlit that? Chuck? You can’t be serious. Journeyman? Wasn’t that called Quantum Leap? It’s always more fun when a highly touted show falls apart right in front of the audience – Studio 60 where’d ya go?? Oh I remember…you didn’t even last an entire season. (While the most outstanding comedy on television, 30 Rock, continues on)

A tell tale sign that a show is probably not that good is with a simple math formula I devised recently. The amount of times a network crams promos down the throats of its audience for a new series is directly proportional to how terrible it looks. (And also how nervous they probably are of it’s chances) I call it The Inverse Proportion of Good. Enjoy.

Bonds

Barry Bonds passed Hank Aaron last night to become the all time home run king. I’ve never cared less about a major sports milestone that I do right now. If ol’ Barry was even 35% less of a total d-bag, maybe I’d care a smidge more. As it stands, the next 5 years can’t come fast enough. (read: A-Rod)

Norah, Will You Marry Me?

January 23, 2007

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of the new Norah Jones album, Not Too Late, and I was not disappointed. The PR angle they’re taking on this album is that it’s her first that she completely wrote or co-wrote. On my first few listens, it was more of the same Norah I first feel in love with. Subsequent listens has allowed the intimacy of her own words to speak volumes.

Is it her best album? Probably not (It will hard to ever beat Come Away With Me) Is she contiuning in the right direction? Absolutely. Will she marry me? You never know. :)
